We developed a conference hall interior design concept in which a dark envelope, lines of light on the ceiling and warm wood all work for the event: attention stays on the stage, and guests are comfortable both during the talk and in the break.

The brief

The space had to host different formats: large conferences and lectures, several parallel sessions, buffets and networking. That meant planning a hall that can be transformed without renovation, a clear flow of guests from the entrance to their seats, a separate coffee area and a strong stage that is easy to see from every row.

Layout

The concept offers two configurations, shown on the seating plans:

Configuration

Seating

1 — one large hall

88 seats theatre-style + a buffet area with high tables

2 — two separate halls

88 seats + 36 seats, divided by a movable partition

The main hall runs along the window façade, with the stage and media wall at the far end. Glazed doors lead from the hall to the foyer, and the second hall sits at a right angle and is closed off by the partition.

The SPACE DESIGN solution

The envelope is dark: black walls and columns, an open ceiling with wooden panels and services painted black. Against it, light takes the lead — linear luminaires cross the ceiling in a graphic pattern and set the rhythm of the room. The warm texture of wood on the movable partitions and chairs balances the black, and a dark carpet with a light geometric pattern gives the hall its character.

Visualization

The concept is presented in 22 final 3D visualizations and two seating plans. The project was not built, so below is what each zone includes.

Conference hall

Chairs with wooden seats on slim metal frames stand in two blocks with a central aisle. At the end is a black media wall with an illuminated logo and a lectern; suspended screens above the rows make the talk visible from the back seats. The full-height windows close with black curtains, and next to them stands a decorative screen of illuminated copper slats. For presentations there is a dimmed lighting scene: the general light goes off and only the media wall and screens stay lit.

Transforming the hall

A movable partition of wood-look panels divides the space into two independent halls. When open, the hall joins the coffee break area; when closed, two separate events can run in parallel. The partition has a door for passing between the halls.

Coffee break and networking

A buffet line with white tablecloths and a coffee machine stands by the media wall, and red high tables by the windows invite guests to talk standing up. The red tables are the only bright accent in the dark interior and mark the break zone at a glance.

Foyer

The foyer is separated from the hall by a glass partition with frosted glass and large doors with long pull handles. Wood-look wall panels, a light floor, downlights and low-level LED lighting lead guests to the entrance. By the doors there is a registration stand with a tablet and a wayfinding sign.

Materials

At concept stage the character of the materials was defined (brands were not selected):

Walls — black paint; wood-look panels on the movable partitions and in the foyer.

Ceiling — open, dark, with wooden panels and crossing linear luminaires.

Floor — dark carpet with a geometric pattern in the hall, a light floor in the foyer.

Partitions — movable wood-look panels; frosted glass partitions with black frames between the foyer and the hall.

Furniture — chairs with wooden seats on metal frames, red high tables, buffet tables, a lectern.

Decor and media — media wall with an illuminated logo, suspended screens, decorative illuminated copper slats by the windows, black curtains.

Planning a conference hall or event space?

SPACE DESIGN creates commercial interiors — offices, business centres and event halls — from a consultation and concept to working drawings, custom furniture and author supervision.
